What You Should Know About Silke & Hagen Roesler:

Silke & Hagen Roesler are worship leaders and a gospel band from Bremerhaven, Germany. On August 29, 2020, they released their new ‘Chainbreaker’ single. After enjoying three decades making worship and gospel music for other artists, Hagen returned to making music – and with the blessed assistance of his lovely wife Silke of more than 20 years. Hagan’s musical expertise shines through this with the release of ‘Chainbreaker,’ and Silke’s vocals are the silk adding great texture to this spiritual song.

There is cause for celebration! Why? Well, on YouTube ‘Chainbreaker’ has already amassed more than 50k views, which is incredible for an indie song having only been out for a month. That acclaim easily represents the many people who are loving the wisdom of Psalm 95 interpreted through song.

What ‘Chainbreaker’ Sounds Like:

‘Chainbreaker’ sounds like a song performed for Thanksgiving Sunday service. A song the choir sings after the benediction, praising the most high. A song on praise and worship radio stations promoting the good news. ‘Chainbreaker’ sounds like a secret fact of life, beyond the noise of society.

This song is water for the parched plants. Vocally, this dynamic duo successfully sings in unison, and it sounds like blissful anointing. The way Silke & Hagen’s high energy and camaraderie are felt through the song, and amplified in the music video, suggests uniting with others can create magic.

The Story Behind ‘Chainbreaker’:

One’s faith in God can be measured by one’s faith in himself. After watching the music video for ‘Chainbreaker,’ it’s obvious Silke and Hagen have admirable faith. The surety in their vocals, and the rightness of their lyrics show me an undoable tether to Christ. It also shows me their willingness to praise God openly, just as Psalms 95 encourages us to do. Here’s what Hagen had to say about the verse’s influence on the creation of ‘Chainbreaker’….

“[In reference to Psalm 95] Thanksgiving, for me, is so important. To have a thanksgiving heart of worship can change your life. Thanksgiving directs your gaze away from all the bad and sad things that may happen in your life, to what He has done for you. Think about the good things in your life, this might be sometimes hard to see, but there are good things. And when your heart is bound to grief and sorrows, let the Lord be your Chainbreaker….”

Silke & Hagen Roesler recognize Christ as King, and they’re floating in the arms of God with ‘Chainbreaker.’ This is proof that casting your burdens to Christ brings life, just as the sun brings warmth, and the application of knowledge brings wisdom.

‘Chainbreaker’ Spiritual/Lyrical Highlights

“Let’s joyfully shout to the Lord, He is the rock of our salvation….” This trumpeting lyric, an interpolation of Psalm 95, comes at about the song’s midpoint, and it’s a pretty powerful suggestion. It’s free money if you think about it. When you are close to God, blessings fall from the sky, and doors emerge from what we call failures and mistakes. The key is to remain relaxed and alert in the knowledge that God will take care of you.

According to Hagen, the song is equally inspired by Psalm 116:16. He affirms, “Jesus already freed us from our chains, be thankful for that and trust him; because we know that God works for the good of those who love him….for those who have been called according to his purpose.”

The commonality of both Psalm 95 and 116:16 is timeless advice, and an effective foundation for a song. Those two verses encourage me to defeat fear with faith, not letting anything external steal my mind or joy, praising God verbally and non-verbally (action).

Targeted For Fans Of:

Andrea Helms, Bethel Music, Sarah Brendel

Final Thought About ‘Chainbreaker’:

‘Chainbreaker’ is a praise and worship song that can trigger a light switch to power on inside those still soul-searching. Also, it is a pleasant reminder that once one wakes to Christ within, once one truly discovers and accepts who they are, they will inevitably break chains and barriers that may seem set.

What You Should Know

Angela Johnson-Neely released her debut single, ‘Good Morning Lord,’ on August 11, 2020 – just two weeks after delightedly celebrating her 50th year here on Earth. The song is a fun, uptempo jam that boasts simply of God’s greatness. Neely wrote and recorded this uplifting song during the antagonistic COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating how art can be created in times of weary and uncertainty. With the release of ‘Good Morning Lord,’ Neely is spreading grateful energy, inspiring unity through her music.

‘Good Morning Lord’ is being well-received by fans. On Apple Music, the track has already been marked as a fan favorite, and it recently hit Digital Radio Tracker’s  Global Top 50 Gospel/Inspirational Airplay Chart at #29 the first week of airplay.

What It Sounds Like

‘Good Morning Lord’ sounds like a classical Christian song to start and end Sunday service, led by vocals comparable to those of Lalah Hathaway, and harmonies reminiscent of music by Forever Jones. When I press play on ‘Good Morning Lord,’ my heart & soul echo the song’s title with the quickness, recognizing and appreciating my own life even more.

This is the debut single from Neely, and it doesn’t sound amateur at all. Sure, the vocals are a little deeper, but so is the message, and that makes this one song for the history books. The hook repeats “because He’s been so good to me,” a harmonic and timeless truth to be shared with everyone, waking up those sleeping minds and drowsy hearts. This new song is heavenly, a get-up song to jam on Saturday mornings when it’s time to clean-up the house – and, not just the bodily house, but also the mental and spiritual one.

The Story Behind the Song

Angela Johnson-Neely’s new single is meant to bring positive and uplifting energy to us all, inspiring unity and love. And, much like all of us, she’s been coping with the confines & casualties of COVID-19, while also noticing the protests for justice and equality. This brought plenty of motivation for the creation of ‘Good Morning Lord.’ Here’s what Angela Neely had to say about the story behind her debut single:

“On July 29th, 2020, I celebrated 50 years on God’s green earth. I am so thankful to Him for truly guiding me through [my] life’s path, and what better way to commemorate this message… by recording my very first single, ‘Good Morning Lord.’ [‘Good Morning Lord’] is an inspiring praise and worship song geared to uplift our spirits, and to remind us that we need to enhance our personal relationship with our heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” – Angela Johnson-Neely

Spiritual Highlights

This song definitely brings our spirits up during this time of uncertainty. And, the deeper suggestion of drawing closer to God is glaring. I hear it in music by James Fortune & FIYA, Michael Stampley, J. Moss, The Clark Sisters, Le’Andria Johnson, Erica Campbell, and so many others who also share music to bring people closer to God. Well, truth be told, all times are uncertain when your connection to the source is faint, or non-existent.

For Fans Of

Forever Jones, The Williams Brothers, The Addison Singers

Final Thought

The best part about ‘Good Morning Lord’ is the good intention behind its creation: to bring our spirits up during times of such rule & loss. It matters not whether we’re going through a pandemic, the world has always been going through changes – and what makes adjusting to those changes easier, is a strong connection to God. With that, I highly recommend you stream ‘Good Morning Lord,’ and share it with your friend and family, encouraging them to be increasingly grateful for their lives.

A Cause For Celebration

There is cause for celebration as well. On Apple Music, “Determination” has a track badged as a fan favorite — ‘Psalm 33:2,’ a praise-filled gospel gem that encourages constant foot-tapping and head-nodding. The release of “Determination — EP” quickly followed Instruments of Musick’s ‘Moving Forward’ single release on April 30, 2020.

Gospel Music Historian Bob Marovich, Syndicated Columnist Eunice Moseley and Music Reviewer Taylor Valery highly recommends “Determination — EP”. Valery said, “[Album] motivates me to be strong in faith, and to commit daily to God.” As the world slowly reopens, and music lovers search for new sounds, Instruments of Musick help usher in positive energy with their uplifting and fun music.

What You Should Know

David Billingsley released “House of David Volume 1,” his sophomore studio album worldwide on July 31st, and I’m so glad about it. Again, he teamed up with Devine Jamz Gospel Network to help spread word about his new album. And like his first release, I have the blessing of reviewing his second album.

What you should know? “House of David Volume 1” is a mellow, rich and fully developed set of peaceful piano music, perfectly summing up the profound adoration and respect Billingsley has for his late father; David Columbus Billingsley II, who passed away on June 28. This new jazz album is uplifting, complete with 17 songs that do stand up to the fear of COVID-19.

What It Sounds Like

“House of David Volume 1” effortlessly fuses the jazz, gospel and classical music genres. It sounds like a beautiful mash up of Alicia Keys and Wolfgang Mozart. The first song on the album, the title track, opens innocently. When I listen, I feel emotional, my heart gets heavy for the next three minutes. This tells me that David Billingsley was missing his father, dearly.

David Billingsley Shares Heartfelt Visual

I’m pleased with the outcome of this project. For a sophomore feat, it’s remarkably polished and developed — hence my comparison to Alicia Keys and Mozart. The music tells you a story, if you let it. It simply says, “here’s the way I heal, try it with me….”

Track two, ‘For Dad,’ is a little more upbeat, and it sounds like a declaration of endless love. Billingsley plays the keys with heart, and you can hear it instantly. If there were lyrics to this song, I imagine they’d croon some of the reasons Billingsley III will be so missed.

Track three, ‘For Mom,’ is a fun and upbeat song, full of charming melodies that make me smile.

Spiritual Highlights

This album was recorded at Wild Sound Recording Studio, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A professional recording studio once used by the late Cam Waters, Sheila E, Charlie Roth, and more. An intimate setting, only surrounded by supportive and creative energies, “House of David Volume 1” came to life, and now gives even more life with its healing nature.

From meditative tracks like ‘All Be The Same’ and ‘Hope,’ to rich ones like ‘Geneva St.’ and ‘The Messenger,’ this album sees me unlock a deeper spiritual side of myself. I can easily slip into prayer by listening to “House of David Volume 1.”

David Billingsley, with this new release, celebrates family, faith, contemporary jazz, and further exemplifies ideal indie music. The passion in the music is evident — it encourages stilling the mind, relaxing the body, and soothing the soul.

For Fans Of

Lang Lang, The Piano Guys, Michael Lewin

Final Thoughts

I highly recommend the streaming of “House of David Volume 1.” As I mentioned in my review of this album’s heartfelt music video, the energy of “House of David Volume 1” is stellar and sentimental. And, I still know Billingsley III is making his father very proud.

This new jazz album doesn’t make me forget about my problems, it helps channel the strength and wisdom to actually solve them. I think David Billingsley is a great artist, and this sophomore studio album emphasizes that.

What You Should Know

Gospel Rapper CYB, founder of GospelBeats has teamed up with Devine Jamz to spread word about his new album “Today We Ready,” coming in September 2020. I can truly say this artist, producer, and engineer will be adding to his robust repertoire with this new set.

At this point, I’ve listened to the songs on album “Today We Ready” at least 7x, and both I’m impressed, able to list my favorites: ‘Today We Ready’, ‘Christ Driven,’ ‘About Me,’ and ‘Him Alone.’ What you should know about the album is that the message is a timeless one: put your faith and trust in God first, and the kingdom of heaven will be added on to you.

This Album Will Be A Go-To

“Today We Ready” comes at great time — not just to ward off the evils of COVID-19, and the perilous journeys of African-Americans — but to strengthen the faith of all the people who believe in God’s good news.

There is no doubt that CYB’s new album will be a go-to album for spiritual warriors like me, dedicated to daily Christ-living. The title track alone says it all, but when you listen in its entirety, it can and will replenish the soul.

LISTEN TO ALBUM REVIEW

My Favorite Songs

CYB‘s moniker stands for Count Your Blessings; a nice & sweet suggestion for us all to count our blessings daily. In the end this upcoming album’s title track, you can hear a suggestive chant of “count your blessings.”

Truth-be-told, that is something anyone can benefit from mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically — if they are serious about establishing and maintaining the positive and faithful mindset. Taking stock of your whole life, being grateful for breath and free will, it can only welcome more to be grateful for. And that is why the track ‘About Me’ hits so hard. I can highly appreciate music that feels like it was created specifically for my soul’s journey.

What also makes this music so great is its professional finish, it’s head-banger quality and overall positive vibes — a loving marriage of hip-hop and inspiration.

In addition to ‘About Me,’ I’m a fan of ‘Christ Driven,’ a song about CYB’s focus on a life of love like Jesus Christ. The song opens with a quick prayer, basically letting the Lord know that he is available to be used to effect positive change with his music.

Another favorite, ‘Him Alone,’ encourages us to seek happiness in God alone. This song hits home for me, because I’ve learned a hard lesson in life about worshipping the wrong things. I can remember having spent so much time having faith in everything else but myself. ‘Him Alone’ will always remind me of where I have come from, and where I am going.

The title track is also a blessing, perfectly punctuating the 8-track gospel hip-hop album. The persistent chanting of the title in the song’s intro is motivational, just like the Black Lives Matter movement. The song also reminds me of Beyoncé’s ‘I Was Here’ — a Diane Warren composition.

For Fans Of:

Lecrae, Canton Jones, Izzy Produx

Final Word: Highly Recommended

Without any hesitation, I am highly recommending “Today We Ready,” so when it is released later this year in 2020, do go and stream on all your digital music platforms. Links are listed below so you can keep connected with CYB today.

Turn This Thing Around

This song is entitled “Lord turn this thing around”. The police killings and injustices have had me on edge and I had to pick up a pen and express my feelings. I feel sorry for all who have lost their lives to Police killings. Also ones who have died innocently to gunfire. My sister Talayna Pettigrew was kind enough to sing this song for me. We want the Lord to turn things around in this world and we know that he will.

What You Should Know

James Fairchild wrote ‘Replay’ in 10 days, at the wise age of 55, in response to past actions that have forever changed his life — for the good, of course.

June 19, 2020 Alex VanTrue — leader of Europe’s top tribute band One Vision – Queen Tribute — released ‘Replay’ as a single. Recently, on Victory 100. 9 FM in Little Rock, AR, the song has already claimed a top 40 position, peaking at no. 22. VanTrue couldn’t have been a better choice to take James Fairchild’s reflective composition to the next level.

What It Sounds Like

Press play on ‘Replay,’ and its initial guitar strums sound like a secular country – rock song, but as it continues, the passion and lyrics easily render this a Christian Alt Rock gem. As a matter of fact, the song piques my interest in the continued fusion of Christian and mainstream rock music.

A slow, mellow, meditative open, with light guitar strums that irrevocably illustrate truth, ‘Replay’ grabs my attention with the quickness.

Spiritual Highlights

What makes this song so special is the profound, life-changing story behind its creation. James Fairchild, at the age of 24 in 1982, had a brief relationship with a married woman, and the aftermath was the secret termination of an unborn child. In the dark, and heartbroken, Fairchild was deeply affected by the loss. ‘Replay’ is Fairchild speaking on that experience from a matured state of mind. He now sees how it was designed to bring him closer to God.

As most traumatic experiences often do, Fairchild was inspired to feel better about the situation, and to make some good sense of it. Here’s what he had to say about the circumstance:

“The feeling of guilt from an accidental fall was bad enough but taking a baby’s life by choice was heart wrenching beyond comparison.”

This tragedy, though an inevitable effect of an unholy cause, brought Fairchild and his family closer. His stepson fathered a child, and Fairchild found himself wanting to hold the baby a lot, which inspired much of the song’s lyrics.

Leading Lyrics

Near the middle of ‘Replay,’ the lead-in to the chorus, Fairchild writes:

My future was gone, in a few days, oh

I can’t replay, what’s been taken away

With the help of Alex VanTrue’s powerful, enthusiastic vibrato, this shows me how deeply hurt Fairchild was after the finding that his unborn child was taken from him.

At the end of ‘Replay,’ about 20 seconds before close, VanTrue woefully wails on behalf of Fairchild, further emphasizing his pain with the following lyric:

When your judgment is passed upon me

All I ask is

Can I hold my baby?

This pain, this upset, it supports the fact that we all can, and usually do, surmount to more than what we’ve endured. Our trials and tribulations, if assessed and hurdled appropriately, will inspire real change in the self — and, in others.

For Fans Of

Skillet, MercyMe, Jeremy Camp

Final Thought

It’s not uncommon that life and love do challenge us to pay more attention to our bodies, minds, and souls — to what we truly feel, and that often motivates us to effect positive change. In the case of James Fairchild, experiencing the involuntary loss of a child was traumatic, and yet it led to a beautiful piece of art that will forever be in music history.

The same goes for many creatives, such as me. I’ve made incredible mistakes in the past, but thinking retrospectively, those mistakes helped mold me into the spiritual warrior I am. Despite how uncomfortable it was living through it, I morphed into a beautiful being. And, likewise for James Fairchild.

Instruments of Musick

What You Should Know

Instruments of Musick released their first extended play, “Determination,” on June 12, 2020. Released only two weeks ago, it is cause for celebration as Apple Music has starred the final track as a fan favorite.

This success shouldn’t be such a surprise though, no, not for a family band whose been learning to make music since childhood. Fatman and Garvin both began learning to play instruments such as the pedal-steel guitar, at the ages of 11 and 15.

Instruments of Musick recently joined the Houston, TX record label Uplifting Music In The Spotlight, with divine determination to share their music with the world.

What It Sounds Like

A very necessary breath of fresh air, that’s what it sounds like. This new set of songs help me remember who I am, and what my soul purpose is. The melodies are countrified, funky, fun, easily setting me up for joy and dance. I praise God daily for my own salvation, of course, and ”Determination” is the celebration soundtrack.

The overall production is polished with the love and permission of God, waking up any sleeping sun. Right away, track 1, ‘Country Gospel,’ is an ideal track to set your wake-up alarm to. It’s that “get-up, and go get it” type of tune — truly motivational during such socially distant, economically quiet times.

The album opens warmly, welcoming us to let loose and dance, and closes smoothly, with a track titled after bible verse Psalm 33:2. I can remember feeling this light & loved when listening to Committed’s 2011 eponymous album. All efforts of the production are a sonic “thank-you” to God’s glory. The rich, upbeat tempo of ‘Psalm 33:2’ is contagious, and it makes me shout and jump in joy.

Spiritual Highlights

As I continue to grow through life, I find music like “Determination” to be instrumental in bringing me peace of mind. The final track, ‘Psalm 33:2,’ is a beautiful interpretation of the actual Bible verse:

“Praise the Lord with melodies on the lyre; make music for him on the ten-stringed harp.”

‘Psalm 33:2’ is a shout song, that’s what we do in church after the final blessings and recessional. Ooo-wee, and it does go down for God! Kierra Sheard has a shout song on her 2011 “Free (Deluxe Edition)” Live album.

Another standout song on “Determination” is ‘Moving Forward.’ This song, released as a single in April 2020, with all the lush melodies and runs, inspires me to continue trusting in God’s plan. And, though it isn’t always easy “not looking back,” as the lyrics proclaim, We can’t throw in the towel during every test of faith.

Best Tracks On The EP

The best song on “Determination” is track 5 of 6, ‘Give It to You.’ Why? It’s a groovy jam, telling God that he deserves all our love. The electric guitar helps close the song while underscoring the lyrics “you deserve it all.” With the backing of Devine Jamz Gospel Network, ‘Give It to You’ is set for adds on Commercial FM Urban and Gospel Radio stations.

LISTEN TO THE EP PREVIEW

Also a fan of track three, ‘Sins Got Me in Chains,’ because it’s an inoffensive reminder that I do still sin — yes, I do still miss the mark. No, I don’t sit and stew on the seeming failure, but I recharge in my honest praise to God for my ability to do what it is I set my mind on doing.

For Fans Of

Committed, Kierra Sheard, Forever JONES

Final Thoughts

I recently turned 28, and I feel like I’m finally, comfortably settling in self. I know what I want, what I like, and what motivates me. “Determination” motivates me to be strong in faith, and to commit daily to God. With that being said, I’m highly recommending you all to go stream the EP now. Add it to your library, your playlists, your memory banks — it’s totally valuable.

As you stream “Determination,” I pray it brings you joy and reassurance, in the mighty & reliable name of God.

What You Should Know

On YouTube Thursday, May 8th, 2020, through the renowned independent record label Entertainment One Nashville, David Billingsley — Founder and Executive Director of The Billingsley School of Music & Arts — premiered a verve visual for his new single, ‘I Surrender All.’

i surrender allAs of Wednesday, May 13, 2020, the visual has already amassed more than 500 views, and 25 nods. Not to be confused with the other Christian artist Christian Billingsley, David Billingsley is a Bonafide musician and vocalist, a heavenly instrument having contributed to sets by industry incredibles such as Stokley, Sounds of Blackness, James Grear & Company, and several others.

Purchase Billingsley’s beautiful solo piano debut album, “Hymns From Grandma’s Living Room.”

What It Sounds Like

Heaven. Homage to Heaven, to be real. I am proud of this new single from Billingsley, because it reminds me of the fact that I surrendered all in order to have Jesus lead my life. The title alone is reminiscent of my vow to Christ, and ultimately to myself. It is the ultimate self-love.

To put it in review terms, ‘I Surrender All’ is an absolute professional production, laced with uplifting melodies and hooks, with God’s glory being quite evident.

Have you heard ‘There’s A Fountain Filled With Blood’ by Micah Stampley? Well, quite frankly, Billingsley’s ‘I Surrender All’ is just as beautiful. Those opening keys, gracing my ears one at a time seemingly… an experienced music lover will recognize this tune as blissful. I know I did.

LISTEN TO ‘I SURRENDER ALL’

Spiritual/Lyrical Highlights

One great task of a music video is to personalize the song with a backstory, a relatable sight and sound for us music lovers to connect to — and, of course to increase streams and unit sales. I can make plain how the music video for ‘I Surrender All’ does just that.

David Billingsley graces the screen immediately, connecting us to him and what appears to be an area he calls home. That quick invitation there makes me feel welcome to his world, to his prayer closet. Accompanying this spiritual song are lyrical statements and prayers, presumably of Billingsley’s own God-centeredness. These poetic colloquialisms appear one after the other, and at 2:22 precisely, this angelic lyric read: “Truly Know That Thou Art Mine….”

For me, validating how strong my own connection to the good God truly is.

What You Should Know

David Billingsley, Founder and CEO of The Billingsley School of Music, released “Hymns from Grandma’s Living Room,” his solo piano debut album on May 15, 2020. You can order the album right now on iTunes.

There are 14 incredible piano songs available for streaming on digital platforms: ‘It Is Well with My Soul,’ ‘I Surrender All,’ and ‘Amazing Grace’ are 3 songs I enjoyed the most. All three songs are traditional gospel hymns, and Billingsley pays incredible homage with this new album.

If there’s one thing to know about David Billingsley’s piano solo debut album, it’s that the music is most definitely soothing to the spirit — permits introspection — completely demonstrative of God’s warm embrace.

I’m especially pleased with “Hymns from Grandma’s Living Room” because it comes from a respectable artist, whose experience and artistry has afforded him opportunities to share the stage with Stokley, The Vü, Sounds of Blackness, and more.

What It Sounds Like

Coming at a perfect time, “Hymns from Grandma’s Living Room” provides solace and strength during the COVID-19 pandemic. The instrumental music Billingsley provides on this new album helps ease my mind into a calm and steady space – easily calling for affirmative prayers for myself and the ones I love deeply.

The music sounds like a peaceful home…. It is whimsical, soulful, nostalgic, and dynamic. If you like music by Shirley Horn, or The Piano Guys, David Billingsley’s new album will do you well.

“Hymns from Grandma’s Living Room” is a peaceful play, perfect for streaming while in my prayer closet. And especially in the evening, when I’m leaving my burdens at the altar like Jessica Reedy.

Spiritual/Lyrical Highlights

Born in Racine, Wisconsin, Billingsley was a child prodigy — he played instruments such as piano, keyboard, drums, and more as a youngster — professionally making his debut as a musician at age 11.

The spirit of professionalism is undeniable throughout “Hymns from Grandma’s Living Room,” notably in my favorite track on the album: ‘Amazing Grace.’ What makes this song so effective and creative is the discernible, traditional melodies that we would usually hear in ‘Amazing Grace.’ The song opens sounding just like the traditional hymn, and then Billingsley adds his smooth touch to it — easily making me press repeat.

Best Songs On The Album

The top songs I enjoy the most on “Hymns from Grandma’s Living Room” are the following:

1. It Is Well with My Soul — This song is another traditional one, enhanced with Billingsley’s soulful & passionate style. The song opens with a prayer, reminiscent of Aretha Franklin’s prayer on Trey Songz’ debut studio album intro.

2. I Surrender All — I listened to this song while on the city bus, headed to Petco to purchase a couple clown fish for my new saltwater tank. Since there were no words in this song, I took advantage of all the freedom that comes with an instrumental — I simply appreciate instrumentals, because they give me real estate for affirmative prayer, and uplifting self-talks. Just like when I’m listening to Shastro, Chopin, Bach, Anugama, or Adam Plack & Deepak Chopra.

3. Amazing Grace — The original song was written in the 1700’s, by poet John Newton; and has since been covered by countless artists. From an honest prayer, Newton created the words to ‘Amazing Grace’ when his vessel was overcome by a storm. What makes this song so precious is not only it’s traditional roots, but it’s timeliness. Everywhere you look for good news, there’s a story about how COVID-19 is affecting the lives of so many. And not unlike the song’s original writer, we too call out to God for mercy and grace in these tumultuous times.

For fans of

Billy Porter, Jon Schmidt, Shirley Horn, The Piano Guys, Yo-Yo Ma

Final Word: Highly Recommended

Of course, I’m highly recommending you stream “Hymns from Grandma’s Living Room.” If you let it, Billingsley’s music can hit you as hard as Le’Andria Johnson’s “The Experience (Deluxe)” live album. Yes sir, it can do you right, just like Mary Mary’s compilation “Go Get It,” and even Jonathan McReynolds’ “Life Music.”

For me, David Billingsley’s “Hymns from Grandma’s Living Room” is essential, contemporary gospel music — just like Jessica Reedy’s debut studio album, “From the Heart.”

I’ve already downloaded “Hymns from Grandma’s Living Room” to my Apple Music library, for offline streaming.

Paul Gilbert’s ‘So I Can Bloom’ Song Is Recommended In A Music Review

Music Review

By Taylor Valery

Freelance Music Reviewer

What You Need to Know:

Another soulful gospel song from Paul Gilbert, ‘So I Can Bloom’ encourages me to keep the faith in God’s plans for my life. The song motivates me to look for the lesson in situations. Gilbert’s soothing vocals can easily pacify any aching heart, any searching soul.

‘So I Can Bloom,’ vocally reminiscent of secular artists Jesse McCartney and Jon B, shines a light on the beauty of strong faith. With this new song, Gilbert expresses his belief in not just God, but in a more purposeful life.

What It Sounds Like:

Paul Gilbert, on February 25, 2020, released his “Soulville” extended play, which contains the spiritual single ‘So I Can Bloom.’ What this song sounds like is a pep-talk, a prayer, an affirmative prayer, exercising unshakable faith.

I am in love with the song’s harmonies, they’re so upbeat, so bold… so bucolic, and they lead me to relatable lyrics and catchy ad-libs.

Spiritual/Lyrical Highlights:

Paul Gilbert croons in acceptance of God’s purpose for his life with ‘So I Can Bloom.’ The song speaks directly to the trials and tribulations one experiences on life’s journey. Being faced with adversity, judgement, pain and sorrow, it can all test your faith. But, when there’s a will, there’s a way.

Like my Ma would always say: You can do anything you put your mind to… and just like many of us, Paul Gilbert’s faith and focus are tried — ‘So I Can Bloom’ is a conqueror’s testimony. It’s my testimony.

A memorable lyric:

God is removing (the undesirable from me) // He is doing (a work everyone can see) // And He’s allowing me (allowing me to grow)….

Best Part About ‘So I Can Bloom’:

Honestly, I’d say the best part of ‘So I Can Bloom’ is the whole production’s power to pull music lovers closer to Christ within.

Hearing Gilbert’s vibrato on every other lyric was a wonderful treat. And even greater, listening to him profess his faith in God so creatively, so eloquently, it only encourages my own affirmative prayers to the most high.

For Fans Of:

Jonathan McReynolds, Isaac Carree, Travis Greene, Micah Stampley

Final Word:

Because I’m absolutely impressed with the passion and prayer heard in Paul Gilbert’s new “Soulville” extended play, I’m highly recommending you stream it now.

This four-track set also has a song starred as a fan favorite on Apple Music — ‘Touch the Cross.’ After reading this review, and you go to stream ‘So I Can Bloom,’ it too should see fan-favorite status.

But I know those stats are not what is driving Paul Gilbert to release such positive, soulful music, he emphatically wants to share with us God’s goodness through delightfully inspiring music.

Music Review

By Taylor Valery

Freelance Music Reviewer

What You Need to Know:

If there’s one thing to take away from listening to Jamaican-born Rick Fusion’s new single ‘Moving On,’ I’d say it’s the decision to have faith in God and his plan for your life. That’s definitely what I believe after preoccupying myself with Fusion’s new extended play, “Control.”

What It Sounds Like:

Released on November 4, 2019 as part of Fusion’s contemporary reggae gospel extended play “Control,” ‘Moving On’ is a spiritual, soulful song with mellow music and timeless lyrics.

‘Moving On’ is track four, parked near the end, imperceptibly reminding us to keep our faith firm in Jesus Christ at all times.

Spiritual/Lyrical Highlights:

Here is one tried and true lyric Fusion uses in ‘Moving On’:

It doesn’t matter what the enemy might try, we are serving the most high.

That lyric is definitely an affirmation that works. It’s an affirmative prayer in and of itself. The placement of that affirmation in this good gospel song makes it easy to remember—no matter what the enemy might try, I’m serving the most high!

As emphasized in my compilation music review with DaShawn Forrest, moving on from unfruitful things & thoughts, and onto blessed things can definitely serve one well. It is key to faith.

Best Part About ‘Moving On’:

The best part about ‘Moving On’ I would say is the story behind its creation….

Rick Fusion developed the idea for ‘Moving On’ after moving from Alaska to Killeen, Texas as a U.S. Soldier. Feeling stagnant, lost, and empty, Fusion visited churches for relief but still felt nothing inside. After nearly giving in to sin one evening, the spirit of the Lord took control, redirecting him to a church called Destiny World Outreach Center.

The presence of the Lord was undeniable there, like a replenishment to his soul. He instantly felt like he was moving on in the name of Jesus.

The creation of ‘Moving On’ put Fusion at a good place with his faith—he knows that God will not fail him. And, he knows that he can fearlessly let go, and let God.

For Fans Of:

Sherwin Gardner, Jaron Nurse, Prodigal Son, and Joshua Kesler

Final Word:

Although the heartfelt single ‘Moving On’ was the focus of this review, I am highly recommending you set aside 20 minutes and immerse yourself in Rick Fusion’s entire extended play “Control.”

That’s right! Add it to your playlists, mention it to your friends & family, and even talk about its uplifting message and spirit-calming music. Everyone needs to hear about how God can and does change lives.

Stream ‘Moving On’ now, and check out Rick Fusion on social media.

Behind The Music: UG FRANK, ‘Baba You Too Much’

Behind The Song, Christian Music In The Spotlight, DEVINE JAMZ, Devine Jamz Gospel Network, Gospel, HOMAGE COLLAGE, Marketing The Gospel, Music Lovers, MUSIC REVIEW, New Release Music, New Released Album, Singer-Songwriter, TAYLOR VALERY, UG Frank

MEET UG FRANK

Osarugue Egbon, better known as UG FRANK, is an undeniably gifted gospel artist, and fun fashionista from Benin City, Nigeria. Her single ‘Baba You Too Much’ gushes over the goodness of God. The song comes from her new 5-track set of world-class calming music, “Surrounded.” The album was released October 22, 2019, and is available to stream now.

UG FRANK, a master’s degree recipient, gave her life over to Christ in 2013, and has since served as worship leader at St. Josephs Chosen Church International, and Winners Chapel International Surrey. UG FRANK aims to transform the lives of God’s people through ministry, praise, & worship. With the release of “Surrounded,” she is more than happy to bless the souls of others. Moreover, God definitely works in mysterious ways. We are all gardeners in God’s garden, meant to manifest & maintain its glory. And in UG FRANK’s case, it was in an encounter with the Lord, that she received the call of duty- to create healing songs of, and for the spirit.

With that said, I’m going to tell you more about what makes this album so affective, and why a deep connection with God is even more.

30 Minutes of Tranquility

Though I like albums that carry a longer running time, there’s simply something special about “Surrounded.” The musical production on this album is versatile with blending genres such as gospel and jazz. Track one, the title track, oozes traditional gospel vibes with its repetitive, relieving lyrics. UG FRANK’s heartwarming vocals on this eight-minute song commands peace, acknowledging the powerful presence of God. It really encourages one to be still, and know that I Am.

Track two, ‘Shekinnah Glory,’ celebrates the holiness of God. The song sings “you are holy, holy, holy…” so passionately, and prayerfully. So, I sing along. ‘Shekinnah Glory,’ lyrically reminiscent of Micah Stampley’s ‘He Loves Me,’ and Mali Music’s ‘The Glory of the Lamb,’ truly affirms the goodness & purposefulness of God. Press play, and feel God’s covering increase. The upbeat melody is indicative of gratitude, and such gratitude carries over to the next track, ‘Lost in Your Love.’ This song is lush, and it says the Lord’s presence is so warm and wonderful. UG FRANK croons of God’s kindness, and greatness, being all over her.

Which brings me to my favorite on “Surrounded,” the final track ‘Baba You Too Much,’ a stunning song about being overcome with the blessings of God, like music by Christine Storm. This song is filled with inspirational lyrics like “Everything I do is blessed. Everywhere I go is blessed.” It’s so beautifully clear, that when we believe, and tell ourselves this on a regular basis, we can’t help but to experience elation.

What Would Jesus Do?

Much like UG FRANK, in good times and bad times, she praises the Lord and all His goodness. She knows, already, what God is capable of. She knows that her life has meaning, and despite any adversity, she must continue on living, like Christ. This new album “Surrounded” is perfectly titled, for God is surrounding me as I dance with joy and appreciation.

Highly Recommended….

We all have precious gifts that make this world a better place. Some teachers, some preachers, some doctors, some cleaners. We’re all witnesses to God’s mighty plan to save souls.

So, of course I’m highly recommending you listen to “Surrounded,” and specifically, ‘Baba You Too Much.’ Be inspired to run this race. Constantly seek the Lord, and watch his blessing reign down.

Album Review – “Declare His Glory” – Brother H-963

November 5, 2019 by devinejamz
Christian Artist Spotlight, Christian music, Christian Music Marketing Promotion, Christian Recording Artist, Contemporary Christian Artist, Contemporary Christian Music, Contemporary Gospel Artist, content marketing, DEVINE JAMZ, Devine Jamz Gospel Network, Gospel Artist Spotlight, HOMAGE COLLAGE, Marketing The Gospel, New Release Album, New Release Single, Singer-Songwriter

Meet Brother H-963

Brother H-963 is a gospel artist, and worship leader. He released “Declare His Glory,” a set of seven spiritual songs, in September 2019. This album has the creative use of key Bible verses.

In addition to his love for Christ, he has sizable love for his wife, and three children. Brother H-963 got his name back in college. Because he used the word Hallelujah so much, his friends started calling him Brother Hallelujah — hence Brother H-963.

Furthermore, the 963 in his name comes from the digits on the side of his keyboard. Brother H-963, being a fan of the Bible, checked out all verses with the numbers 963. As a result, he found Psalms 96:3 is the only part of scriptural text with those numbers, and that is where the album’s concept came from.

Now that you understand how he got his name, and song, let me tell you more about the “Declare His Glory” album, and three of its standout songs.

Creative Lyrical Content Homages God’s Word

With all those subtle strings, and light drums, this music feels inviting, tropical, and warm. The title track, ‘Declare His Glory,’ uses biblical lyrics from verses 3-5 of Psalms 96, rendering a remarkable rhyme: Declare His Glory / Among the nations / His wonders / Among all peoples.

The lyrical content of the song is reminiscent of Christine Storm’s ‘Blessed,’ and ‘Blessed & Highly Favored’ by The Clark Sisters. These songs have in common the beautiful declaration of God’s glory.

There’s another song from “Declare His Glory” that stands out, for its reflective & reverential lyrics, is ‘Run-924.’ The song is about Brother H-963’s attention on spreading the gospel through music. The more he focused on his artistry, the easier it got to create. The song mentions 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, reminding us to keep steadfast in our life’s journey.

The lyrical content of ‘Run-924’ clears anxiety, and motivates forward movement like Marvin Sapp’s ‘If You Just Believe,’ The Addison Singers’ ‘I’m Only On A Journey,’ and Tamela Mann’s ‘All to Thee.’ What I appreciate most about ‘Run-924’ is that the subtle guitar strumming paired with those verve vocals sound like a race being run with grace.

Not to leave out the brilliance of ‘Romans8Love,’ track three. The Song rings out in a timeless tune recognizing God’s gift to us— Life. It affirms the freedom and fullness we have in Christ. With the breath of God in our lungs each day, we know we’re more than conquerors. We know we don’t have to grow weary. It’s clear that Brother H-963 wanted to share God’s assuring peace with us. He tells us that God’s love always provides, and it never fails. All we have to do is know it, right here and right now.

Highly Recommended…

I am highly recommending you stream the creative, cultural “Declare His Glory.” This album educates listeners on key Bible versus, appreciates the love & law of God, and inspires right thinking. It tells us that one day we’re going to our heavenly home; but first, we must live right.

Patrick Foreman - I’m Calling on You

Music Review – Patrick Foreman & Family – “I’m Calling on You”

September 18, 2019 by devinejamz
Christian Music In The Spotlight, Contemporary Gospel, Devine Jamz Gospel Network, Gospel, He’s Able, Hit Single, HOMAGE COLLAGE, I’m Calling, I’m Calling on You, Music Lovers, MUSIC REVIEW, Songwriter, TAYLOR VALERY, THETVWRITER

There’s just something about Praise & Worship that simply sets me in forward motion, after experiencing turbulence in life. “I’m Calling on You,” by Patrick Foreman & Family is an album that reminds you of the grace of God, encouraging deeper connection (Taylor Valery).

PATRICK FOREMAN & FAMILY

Foreman is a clever creator. How? Well, his moniker is all-inclusive. It’s recognizing that its not all about his experiences, but about everyone’s experiences in this world – it’s about Family. About kind community, and collective faith, rebuking any devil in our way. His name is a subtle reminder that all we need is each other to effect positive change in the world.

LISTEN: “I’M CALLING ON YOU”

As a music writer, I’m always seeking new artists to cover. When I received Patrick Foreman & Family’s new album, “I’m Calling on You,” I was immediately impressed by the dedication to God heard in each track.

The album itself is eclectic, including vocals from various artists. When you listen, you’ll hear features from Eric Armstead, Tawan Gray, Richard Davis, David Scott, India Woolfolk, and more. This set has eight songs, excluding two bonus tracks; two are my favorite from the album. I’m going to tell you why ‘I’m Calling on You’ ft. Eric Armstead, and ‘He’s Able’ ft. David Scott are so effective.

PRODUCTION IS PARADISIACAL

Patrick Foreman & Family’s “I’m Calling on You” has that even energy praise, similar to James Fortune & FIYA’s “Live Through It,” and it has such pure worship, like Micah Stampley’s “Release Me – EP.”

I Need You, I Love You, and I’m Calling on You

What I love most about the title track’s bonus version is that it opens with a profound prayer by Eric Armstead, reminiscent of Grammy-winning music by Kirk Franklin. Song spends a minute on verse one, then seamlessly goes in to the B-section with soothing choral backing vocals, which furthered Foreman into a purposeful praise. Listening to this track gives me a heavenly vibe; so, I sit back and take a deep breath, thanking God for his grace and guidance.

I appreciate songs like ‘I’m Calling on You (Bonus Track)’ ft. Eric Armstead, because they never fail to get my attention completely on God. Song sends me to seek the presence of God, our heavenly home, that quieter consciousness. Having been diagnosed with Epilepsy, I tend to cling to music that helps calm my mind. I constantly seek peace, and that peace is in God.

Remember, He’s Able

Not contrarily, there’s another song on “I’m Calling On You” that sets me free: ‘He’s Able’ ft. David Scott. There’s just something about Scott’s vocal performance that screams gratefulness. He paces the song slowly, acknowledging God in all  his victory.

Song hits gracefully, like ‘In the Midst of it All’ by Yolanda Adams. And, it’s message of giving your battles over to God reminds me of ‘Encourage Yourself,’ by Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers, and ‘Struggle Not,’ by LeAndria Johnson. I love music that inspires me into action, attention, and appreciation. Music that manages to shift my mindset is a blessing straight from God.

Patrick Foreman & Family was successful in those sending positive vibes with new set “I’m Calling on You,” especially with the song ‘I’m Calling on You’ and (Bonus Track) ‘He’s Able.’ The latter song could easily be a companion for Erica Campbell’s stirring new single ‘Praying and Believing,’ which also encourages purposeful prayer.

RECOMMENDATION

“I’m Calling on You” is highly recommended! At this point, I should tell you the standout tracks ‘I’m Calling on You,’ and ‘He’s Able’ are great for gospel playlists. I’ve already added them to my SoulGood: INSPIRE playlist. What playlist are you adding them to?

I told y’all, there’s just something about Praise & Worship that simply sets me in forward motion. And, this new music from Patrick Foreman & Family hits the spot. I’m talking, when I’m feeling disconnected & discouraged, ‘He’s Able’ reminds me of God’s desire to see us happy (Taylor Valery).

Mary Mary - Something Big

Homage – Mary Mary – “Something Big”

June 20, 2019 by devinejamz
Christian Music In The Spotlight, Contemporary Gospel, Devine Jamz Gospel Network, HOMAGE COLLAGE, Homage2Heat, Mary Mary, MUSIC REVIEW, Something Big, TAYLOR VALERY, THE WRITER

Seasoned Gospel sistas, Mary Mary, delivered impeccable inspiration with the release of their fifth studio album, “Something Big.” This album has several songs that pull its listeners closer to God, and I’m going to tell you about them.

Something Big

Album peaked at no. 10 on the US Billboard 200, and no. 2 on Top Gospel Albums. Two US Gospel Airplay singles were released in support of “Something Big”: ‘Walking’ (no. 3), and ‘Survive’ (no. 13).

Of the six Grammy Award nominations this faith-wielding duo has accumulated, “Something Big” earned one at the 54th ceremony for Best Gospel Album.

Production on this album was primarily helmed by Warryn Campbell, of Soul Seekers, with additional production by Gerald Haddon, Jazz Nixon, and LaMar Edwards. Gerold Haddon helped with the piano & strings for the creation of ‘Survive.’

“Something Big” is a genre diverse album, aiming to encourage any good music lover to seek a relationship with Jesus Christ. Elements of hip-hip, R&B, gospel, and electronica are heard throughout this beautiful album. Standout tracks are ‘Something Big,’ ‘Blind,’ ‘Never Wave My Flag,’ ‘Walking,’ and ‘Are You Ready.’

Let me tell you why….

‘Something Big’

Song is a wonderful opener, with incredible energy, encouraging listening to get up and jam to the Lord’s favor. Tina blissfully testifies in verse 1,

Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey everybody, I got something to say / I met this man named Jesus and I ain’t never been the same / You know my heart been changed, my mind been changed / I’m nothing like I was cuz I was stuck on stupid, but now I’m filled with love.

The ‘Something Bigger’ follow-up increases such optimism with added drums, and the lady’s focused flow:

Everybody doin’ that, can’t do it again / Why you mad at me ’cause I wanna do it big? / Don’t think I’m unplugged and I’m disconnected / ‘Cause I didn’t do what y’all expected.

With these two tracks, Mary Mary make it crystal clear that they aren’t wavering in their mission to serve God through their good work in this music industry.

‘Blind’

Christians understand that, when you choose faith, abundant life chooses you. It’s understood that you can choose faith without being perfect in the least bit, so long as you commit to the life-changing journey through Christ. ‘Blind’ illustrates the fact that anyone can go to God, as He doesn’t discriminate. God will instead, reveal you to yourself, inducing an ultimate spiritual awakening, with unconditional love.

‘Never Wave My Flag’

This Timbaland-type tune encourages any believer who may be experiencing hardship, trials, and tribulations to continue trusting the process & purpose God has designed from the beginning.

Songwriting on ‘Never Wave My Flag’ came from the creativity of Mary Mary, Warryn Campbell, Juan Winans, and Matthew Edwards– the latter of which also helped produce the track with Warryn. As a human spirit, finally living for the love of God after years of voluntary separation, the opening verses are extremely relatable:

Seems like I should run away / ‘Cause life is hittin’ me in the face, ay, ay / But I’m here, and I’ll never surrender to fear / Retreat and be defeated, no way, ’cause I can’t, I can’t.

‘Walking’

I totally appreciate this song for it’s humanity, and slow groove. Song simply speaks on the faith walk being an imperfect, yet intentional one. Which, to God, means everything. These lyrics help illustrate just that:

Look at me, I’m tryin’ / Every day, I fall down / Make mistakes, get back up / Try again next time that you see me…[I’m walking, I’m walking, I’m walking now…]

‘Catch Me’

This Juan Winans co-write testifies to listeners of God’s grace. Song explains that though we humans are imperfect, we still can receive the undying love of God through Christ the savior. Lyrics like, “my faith gives me strength” stick out as very understandable.

All in all…

These Stellar Award legends aim to lead listeners to the love of God. A love so undeniable, so unconditional, that we pivot from unfruitful lifestyles to praising God through our daily work. “Something Big” is a phenomenal album, because it helps promote the Good Gospel through good music.

Album Review – “From the Heart” – Jessica Reedy

June 12, 2019 by devinejamz
Album Review, Christian Music In The Spotlight, DEVINE JAMZ, Devine Jamz Gospel Network, HOMAGE COLLAGE, Jessica Reedy, Music Lovers, Sunday Best, TAYLOR VALERY, THETVWRITER

It’s a real pleasure to share my thoughts on the gifted gospel artist, Jessica Reedy. Reedy placed 2nd on season two of Sunday Best, BET’s singing competition. She’s since gone on to create such soothing, and uplifting music that helps spread the wonderful word of God. Her debut disc, “From the Heart” is among my favorite gospel albums to-date.

Jessica Reedy

Album has several relatable lyrics, and a real jamming flow. This devotional disc has features by Soul Seekers, Doc Powell, and Faith Evans. Album also attained commercial success on the music charts, peaking at no. 43 on the US Billboard 200, and enjoying a six week chart run. Additionally, “From the Heart” peaked at no. 1 on the US Top Gospel Albums chart, and no. 5 on the US Independent Albums chart. It’s clear this project had an effect on music lovers, and music critics alike.

I’m both a music lover, and music critic, and I happen to love “From the Heart.” I appreciate Reedy’s vulnerability, vocal vitality, positivity. The album begins with the proud ‘Put It On the Altar,’ and goes right into the optimistic ‘Always’. This type of album opening creates such a vibe, and tells a music lover like me that positive energy is the key.

Next is my favorite track, ‘I’m Still Here,’ which features Soul Seekers (gospel group that includes Warryn & Teddy Campbell, the husbands of Erica & Tina Campbell). Song is in response to God’s presence, His favor, and to our purpose of praise through good work. Song opens with an incredible harmony preceding title lyrics, “I’m still here,” which lead Reedy right into testimony:

Trouble, I had my share of trouble
But I’m still here
Heartache, I had my share of heartache
But I’m still here
Oh disappointments, I had my share of disappointments
But I’m still here
Ooooh lonely nights, I had my share of lonely nights
But I’m still here

If you want to, each day can technically be considered a perilous journey if you’re working toward a good goal. But with strong faith, hard work and determination, our realities will reflect our dreams. The next track on “From the Heart” reminds me of this fun fact. The Claude Kelly co-write, ‘What About Me,’ written in the perspective of the Lord, reassures us all that faith is all you really need. He calls out to us in all of life’s madness, asking us “what do you really want?” and “what about me?” It’s when our wants align with what His are for our lives, that our realities transform. When you know you want what God wants for you, you just fall in love with Him. Just like Reedy shares in the next track, ‘So In Love (So Amazing)’.

At the album’s halfway mark, ‘Doctor Love’ ft. Faith Evans comes over my Apple earpods. This celebratory song makes me feel good for relying on God as much as I do. Song reminds me the love and support I have in such an eternal being. ‘Doctor Love,’ most of all, makes me want to get up and groove. The soulful Faith Evans did a number on this track, starting the song off with encouraging testimony:

If you’re feeling down and lonely
Let me tell ‘bout a man that you should know
He’s got the power every hour
He’s the reason why my face is all a glow

And then the spiritual ‘Something Out of Nothing’ begins minutes later, taking time from the previous praise songs, to worship unapologetically.

More standout tracks on “From the Heart” include ‘Marching On,’ ‘Blue God,’ and ‘Moving Forward’.

I’d encourage you all to press play on the debut album from Jessica Reedy, and then when hooked, toggle over to her latest single, ‘Can’t Hold Me Back‘.

Single Review – ‘Distance’ – DaeShawn Forrest

June 9, 2019 by devinejamz
CHRISTIAN RAPPER, DaeShawn Forrest, DEVINE JAMZ, Devine Jamz Gospel Network, Distance, Featured Spotlight Artist, Gospel Hip Hop, HOMAGE COLLAGE, INSPIRATIONAL SONGS, JOURNALIST, MUSIC REVIEW, Recording Artist, State Of Mind, TAYLOR VALERY

Meet DaeShawn Forrest, an emerging Christian emcee from Antioch, California. With his latest release “State of Mind,” he effortlessly expresses his gratitude for God’s favor. Though only aged 19, Forrest has survived many storms to be able to stand on such an uplifting platform today. His hearing for God’s word grew stronger as he pulled away from situations that didn’t serve his greater call.

Did you know that reconnecting with God isn’t something to be ashamed of? Well, this is certainly true for Forrest in the creation of ‘Distance,’ ft. fellow Californian gospel artist Ms. KJ’nae. He let me know:

“Initially, it felt like I was in an odd space because I began to have this feeling that I was empty spiritually. I had never felt that way before, so I knew it was God from the start. It wasn’t until a few days later that I had went to God in prayer to address the situation. In so many words, the Lord told me that he wanted to use me, but there was a lot of work that needed to be on myself first. However, for Him to be able to work on me, I had to distance myself from the things and people that had my attention. Not distance myself so far to where I become isolated, but to give myself the necessary space needed so I can be able to hear God when he speaks.”

You see, when you press play on ‘Distance,’ song opens with faint keys very reminiscent of the above mentioned. At 0:22 seconds, it’s met with a calm & collected beat, and a meditative flow. Forrest raps about how distancing himself from negativity drew him closer to God. It’s never easy to quit any habit, but it surely is easy to start a new one. Jesus became a great habit for Forrest again, and it’s clear with ‘Distance,’ you must make yourself available to be used for the greater.

It’s a blessing for everyone, that Forrest decided to kill the noise and take seriously his faith walk. He released “State of Mind,” a powerful LP of Christian hip-hop that celebrates the reconnection with, and reliance on God. So, if you’re into positivity, prosperity, and passion, then music by DaeShawn Forrest is for you.

His music is definitely for me; as not a new believer, but reconnector. I’m slowly approaching thirty years old, and I’m not ashamed to admit that my attention has been so fragmented for the past six years. During and after college, I focused on intimate love and relationships, steady chasing external validation versus my God in me. Much like Forrest, I felt depressed and angry, but I kept dreaming. I still heard a voice in the daytime, and at night. And, that voice was a heavenly reminder of my goal in life – to be happy. At the time, what made me happy was the co-dependent relationships I believed I needed for support at the time. I was too afraid to chase my dream of being a happy writer. To me, although I had a college degree, I still needed experience in order to be taken seriously as a writer. No one was taking me seriously at home, Jesus later revealed that was because I wasn’t taking it seriously.

Well, in a fight with my partner at the time, I was staying with my mother for a few weeks. Mom insisted I meditate to keep from having an epileptic fit; so, I did in my way- Deepak Chopra, The Clark Sisters, and Cognitive Transformations on Apple Music. At the time, in my heart there was this constant aching. In my mind,  there were so many different paths being revealed like a map. So, for answers I began praying and I mean praying like God is right here in front of me. We started having conversations regularly. His responses to me came overtime, but as I sought, He brought. When it comes to ‘Distance,’ the same is true for Forrest, too:

“Jesus revealed a lot to me about how I oftentimes stand in the way of my own growth causing me to have to mature a bit. When creating the song, it felt necessary to highlight the things that led to me distancing myself because I was in that space for a while. It also shows how important it is to keep an ear out for God especially since we want him to always keep His ear out for us.”

DaeShawn isn’t wrong either. This resonates with me so profoundly because I obviously stood in my own way for quite some time. My awareness was low, my attention was in pieces, my emotions were eggshells, and my faith was nonexistent. I was dead spirit, not a living one. So, for my dreams to come true, I had to believe in myself again. I had to forgive myself for sin. And, I had to come to Jesus.

DaeShawn’s ‘Distance’ demonstrates just how faith walking isn’t easy, but it is rewarding.
